Melbourne: The Street Art Update

Regular readers will know that I have a soft spot for street art. In fact, click onto the Melbourne option in the menu bar and you’ll find heaps of pics of street art…I even posted my own walking tour. If you’re interested, the link is here.

I’m not into tagging – the disrespectful, dick and balls that get left on bare spaces by the completely unimaginative – but the seriously creative, inspirational, light the city up work that can transform a brick wall or a laneway into a masterpiece.

There’s heaps of great art if you hop a tram and go into Prahran, Fitzroy, Brunswick, Collingwood, Balaclava…the list goes on…but this time, for this post, we’ll just concentrate on what’s around the city. With luck and good finance management, I’ll be back in October and venture further afield again…

Strachan Lane

You’ll find Strachan Lane off Exhibition St, near Flinders Lane.

Duck Place

You’ll find Duck Place off Flinders Lane. As an aside, Tonka is a must try place for dinner…just saying…

AC/DC Lane

Although the music theme remains strong, AC/DC Lane has had a bit of a revamp…and it’s a clever one.

AC/DC Lane is also off Flinders Lane as you walk down towards Russell Street.

Hosier Lane

Everyone knows Hosier Lane. The good thing about this site is that the art is changed regularly – there’s always something new to see. I especially love the political commentary that goes with it. I’ll let you decide which those are…

You’ll find Hosier Lane off Flinders Lane between Russell Street and Swanston Street.

Caledonian Lane

You’ll find Caledonian Lane just off Lonsdale Street just outside the Emporium Shopping Centre.

Other lanes to check out…

Other lanes in the city worth checking out are:

  • Croft Lane
  • Union Lane
  • Centre Place
  • Drewery Lane

I love love love this one near Section 8 bar in Tattersalls Lane (off Little Bourke St between Swanston and Russell).

The art in the bar is pretty good too…

What about you? Are you a fan of street art or is it something you frown upon? Have you snapped any great stuff recently?

Ok, it’s Thursday, so that means sharing our happy. Like the Partridge Family sang C’mon Get Happy! Am I the only sad case old enough to remember that?

  1. I was in Melbourne in February but did no exploring at all I’m afraid (for the Romance Readers thing) as I flew in and out and participated in sessions the entire time. I did leave the hotel twice for diet coke and wine (across the road) but that was about it.

Interestingly my little childhood hometown (and neighbour now) Maryborough has started getting some street art painted in certain places – they’re commissioning artists etc…

  2. I haven’t been to Melbourne in years so I must get down there to see some of this fantastic street art. I normally spend my days in Melbourne shopping and having coffee in the laneway cafes! 🙂 #TeamLovinLife

  3. The street art is one of the things I love most about Melbourne.

Thanks for sharing some of your favourites.

  4. Well you know I love Melbourne and haven’t been since May 2012. I’m due to visit again. Need an assistant/company in October .. hmmm?? I LOVE all this street art – just so much talent. I think my fav’s are the ones in Strachan Lane but love them all. #TeamLovinLife

  5. I haven’t seen the Melbourne street art for myself, but your pictures capture it beautifully Jo. These artists have such incredible talent!

  6. I’ve been to Melbourne a couple of times, and love the street art. Although I can see that there is so much more to discover and your photos definitely make me want to come and discover more.

  7. I love street art. We are starting to get a street art culture where I love. I love it. It really brightens up the city-scape. I haven’t been to Melbourne for some years, perhaps it’s time I revisited. Have a fabulous weekend, and thank you for stopping by my blog this week.
