December – The Foodie Post

Alrighty, Because of Christmas and house guests it feels as though I’ve eaten out more than I’ve eaten at home so there’s a lot to get through. Apologies in advance if you’re reading this and haven’t yet eaten, but it really is a foodie’s guide to the Sunshine Coast!

Goodslice Pizza Napoletana

This pizza joint hidden away off Aerodrome Rd in Maroochydore is a fantastic discovery. It also happens to be Adriano Zumbo (you’d know him from Australian Masterchef) favourite place for a slice.

We shared one pizza and a salad.

Spirit House, Yandina

While we were here last month too, it’s been on our house guest’s foodie bucket list for as long as they’ve been coming to stay with us and we’ve never quite gotten there.

Somewhere on Buderim

I had to take my friends to my favourite cheap and cheerful Vietnamese. Luckily they loved it as much as I do.

The Boatshed at Cottontree

We were here twice during the month – once for lunch to celebrate a friend’s birthday – and again for New Year’s Eve. On both occasions it was lovely. The pic below right is a Thai papaya salad with beef.

Bocca at Bokarina

Another one I mentioned last month, and another one I had to take my friends to. Between the four of us we ordered an assortment of their small plates. Bellissimo.

Pomona Distillery at Pomona

Another one where the order of the day is share plates. Grant and I shared chicken wings and calamari. Also in the pic is Heather’s tacos.

Saltwater Eco Cruise, Mooloolaba

Grant and I did one of these cruises of Mooloolaba’s canals a few years ago. On that cruise they welcomed us with a smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country performed by a member from the Gubbi Gubbi community and we learnt about some of the bush tucker in the region – amongst other cultural tidbits. The pics below are from that.

This cruise, however, was purely about the bush tucker. The menu is below – although the beetroot tartlets were substituted by a goat’s cheese tartlet.

Another must-do if you’re ever on the Sunshine Coast.

Mapleton Public House, Mapleton

When we left home a massive electrical storm was brewing, by the time we arrived at Mapleton, up in the hinterland, it was taking place below us down on the coast … and by the time we left, we were in the clouds with very limited visibility.

Anyways, to the food. It’s changed since we were here last (see this post) and lunch is “lighter options for warmer days” – I can’t argue with that!

Grant and I chose to share a mini heirloom tomato and cheddar tart and, something that was possibly the best single dish I’ve eaten all year (a big call), the roasted carrots served with nduja and smoked coconut milk. SO good.

  1. Way too much delicious food, Jo and what a great foodie guide you were for your guests. Mike and I must revisit the Sunshine coast for a few days soon. We had a 3 day honeymoon at Maroochydore back in 1998 and used to have weekends away at Mooloolaba before that. Time for a visit I think! x

  2. You always seem to find the best places to eat. Next time I’m on the Sunshine Coast I will have to look out for all these spots!

  3. My goodness, that food all looks delicious and very exotic to my Canadian eyes. That bush tucker cruise and menu is definitely one I would want to try. I love trying new things. Bush tucker = wild foraged foods, correct?

  4. Deliciousness overload Jo. I’ve been compiling a list of places to visit when we’re at Sunshine Coast, from your blog. More for the list. Your photos look good enough to eat

  5. Wowsers! What an incredible month for dining out experiences you had! Each dish looks and sounds better than the last. That cruise food looks over the top for bush tucker!

  6. Oh Jo, so much here that looks so delicious and I have eating envy! You are definitely a foodie and know what you are writing about!

  7. Goodness! What a post! You capture so much ambience in each of your food images. Deliciously scenic! I love those curls on top of the tomato & cheddar tart; how wonderful to have guests & friends to go on food adventures!
