Yeah, I know it’s just glorified street art, and I know heaps of locals are sooooo over it, but I love it. It adds colour, expression, vibrancy and an urban edgy energy to what would otherwise be drab alleys.
The thing is, this isn’t tagging for the sake of tagging (although obviously there is some of that), it’s council mandated (in certain areas) and there’s not a dick and balls in sight (in the street art lanes, anyways). The guys who do this take their art very seriously. And before you start tuft tutting at me, I’m not advocating the whole graffiti damage stuff…
My favourite spots (and a do it yourself tour) can be found in this post, but bear in mind the art is always changing. There are companies running walking tours, so if you’re interested and want to see the latest and greatest, jump on one of these.
Here’s an update from some inner city lanes…
There’s always something happening here. This one is in the process of being re-done.
There was heaps of new painting, sorry, spraying, taking place while we were walking through. By the time this has gone to “print” it would have all changed again.
Probably the best known of the art lanes. All the work here is almost new- having recently been blacked out and repainted over the last month or so- except for the elephant which is, seemingly, a classic.
